Here is my problem:

I'm trying to simply download some files from websites (i tried a lot) ...
download starts ... but after a few minutes my computer freeze completely
.... no more mouse or even CTRL+ALT+DEL available ...

My config is:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
MB ECS KT266A
256 MB DDR
HG 80GB
Nvidia GFORCE 4 MX 440
running under Windows XP Pro (no SP)
and Alcatel USB Speed Touch modem

Any advice would be appreciated.

AnyKind,
You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK

Possibly your cache folder is corrupt:

Also check for updated video drivers .......

I tried your solution but it seems to be as ugly as it was before.

I don't think the TIF could be the problem as it is a fresh new installation
of my computer from scratch

AnyKind,
A screen freeze is usually video driver related ....
Or if one of your internal fans is not working ........
