Hello. I am running Windows 98 with all updates, IE 6.0 SP1. I can
download things like Windows updates, go to sarc.com and do the free online
scan, etc. But when I try to download a file using HTTP thrugh the browser
it won't work. Example. I do to donwload.com and click on the internet
section. Then I click the link to download MSN Messenger 6.1. The browser
start to do something then the browser window goes blank and I get a little
box in the upper left hand corner that looks like an Active X box, and
nothing happens. I have tried this from numerour sites, same problem. I
have removed IE 6.0 and reverted to IE 4.0. Same problem. I have installed
Netscape 4 and Netscape 6, smae problem. Any ideas would be helpfull!!

Cheers
Mark

Sounds like you have some damaged axtiveX components.
in IE click tools/options/settings/view objects
Anything in this window that says "damaged" you can
delete. IE will download them again if it needs them.
Don't forget to clear your temp internet files....
This should help you

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q303/4/01.asp

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.
