IE 6.0 self-shutdown

The following programs began after I visited a commerical website of suspect quality by accident 18 hours ago. When I go to log in to Yahoo Mail or Hotmail, I click 'login' and the IE browser window closes itself. No error message appears. Concurrent with this problem, I am unable to download patches or updates from microsoft.com; when I click on the download button, the following page appears: "http://start-info.com". Finally, I was able to log in to yahoo mail earlier today, however, when I clicked on 'compose', the text box where i was supposed to write my message had pasted in it a copy of the 'http://start-info.com' webpage; I could not cut and paste this information out of the text box; hotmail did not have this problem when I logged in to it. Please help. Thanks!

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
