Here's the scoop - I hope someone can help.
Running Internet Explorer 6.0 windows xp and Norton firewall and antivirus.
All have been recently updated.
Two problems.
First, I think as part of an update the browser can no longer open a link
directly into a new window - I can open a new window but then cut and paste
the shortcut into the address frame. Is there a simple way to correct this?
It's the smaller of the problems.

Second: this regards Amazon.com https secure server site. I cannot get the
secure server page to come up. Amazon says its me. I can get other https
pages to load from other companies but not this one. They said to enable
port 443 and so I went into Norton and added the port.Perhaps I am not doing
that correctly? Anyway, I cannot get the https page anymore for amazon. Any
suggestions?

Lastly, I think Norton is totally disabling pop ups - which would be good
but there are times I want to see the javascript box on sites - either it
doesn't pop up at all or pops up blank. Any way around this?
Please don't suggest uninstalling Norton.
I'd greatly appreciate an answer directed towards a real novice! simple
simple simple!
Thanks.

So what happens? Does the link open in the SAME window instead of as
you expect to open in a new window? Check the browser's advanced
options to see if the option to reuse the window is enabled. What
happens if you right-click on a link and select "Open Link in New
Window"?

For HTTPS, have you checked what happens if Norton Internet Security is
disabled? Also, clear all categories in the firewall's logfile. Then
try to use the site. After the failure, check the firewall's logfile to
see what it blocked.

Try holding the Ctrl key when clicking on a link. Often this is the
override key to disable popup blocking. Otherwise, disable popup
blocking in Norton Internet Security. It's under the Ad Blocking
options. Presumably you have already checked in the Internet security
zone that scripting and Java are enabled.

If I right click on the link to open in a new window the new window opens
but without the link - the page is blank and there is no http address - I
have to paste in the new address the window. Also if following a link from a
document or e-mail it does not automatically open the browser pane anymore -
I have to launch the browser and then paste the address in.

Yes - I have disabled Norton but it has no effect. I think the settings of
where to go are still in effect even if the protection is blocked so that's
not helping but I did check the log and the only thing I see is this
"Default Block Micrsoft Windows 2000SMB" stealthed (ISP site not disclosed
here, microsoft-ds(445) Not sure this makes any sense or even if it has
anything to do with the amazon site but its the only error in the log when I
try to log into the secure site. Does this mean I should add the port 445?
I'm really at a loss and confused. I've contacted amazon but they were not a
great deal of help other than suppling the magic port number - which didn't
help either.

I'll try this - this is the smallest of problems but its still a real drag.
I was hoping during the new and improved updates it would resolve. no such
luck!

New and improved updates? Does this mean you have installed Service
Pack 2 for Windows XP? SP2 is still BETA. You choose to be an unpaid
beta tester. By accepting to install it, you also agreed to use the
special newsgroups where you post such problems. Go there to report
problems with SP2 so those involved can be made aware of your problem(s)
with SP2. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx
for a link to show you the newsgroups for SP2.
