Identifying SP1

I have read on another post that a known bug causes an SP1
version of XP Embedded to not show that it is the SP1 version.

Is there a simple way of determining whether a specific machine
with Embedded installed has or doesn't have SP1 already on it?
(E.g. any give-away file versions or dates?)

Also, we have located a download for Embedded with SP1, but
have not (yet) found a download source for SP1 on its own, that
can be applied to an existing Embedded installation. Is such a
download available if it is not forthcoming from the manufacturer/
supplier of the device in question?

Finally, if such a download is available, is it safe to apply it to an
existing system in the same way as one might do for XP Pro or
Home? Or does the "tailored-to-fit" nature of Embedded make
this not possible for the end user?

Bug is that one entry in registry is missing. You can fix this by entering
that entry
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\CSDVersion REG_DWORD,value
0x100

There is no 100% foolproof way to determine if you have SP1 XPe build, but
you can try to check filesize of files like ntoskrnl.exe

You can apply specially prepared updates on existing embedded image only if
it is supported by XPe image itself.
Search more info about XPE DUA feature. If it is not present then you are
probably stuck.
Finally, if such a download is available, is it safe to apply it to an
existing system in the same way as one might do for XP Pro or
Home? Or does the "tailored-to-fit" nature of Embedded make
this not possible for the end user?

Unfortunately in most cases you can't and should not update image with
general windows updates.
