Does anyone know of a great book or website that explains
in *detail* how to set up XP Pro Services for MAXIMUM
security, best performance, and no error messages. I have
looked at several websites and they are all wrong.

Why do I get perlib & pernet error messages in Event
Viewer?

Define "Wrong". If I tell you that the best video performance can be gained
by disabling DirectX and hardware acceleration that would be wrong. Thats
easy.

However...

If I told you that the best video performance can often be gained by
downloading the latest "beta" drivers for your video card, I'd be correct in
that sense, but you would almost certainly see an increase in errors and
suchlike. Lifes a compromise.

If I told you to buy a hardware firewall as the best thing that can be said
about software firewalls is that they are better than nothing, then I'd be
able to do a good job of defending that as "correct" but it would be an
opinion, not a fact, and in either case may be impractical depending on your
exact situation and needs. I'd certainly give different answers depending on
whether you are talking as a home user with one or two computers, or a
network manager supporting a business network. We'd need more detail to be
able to talk about such things and definately not be "wrong".

disable telnet, terminal services, netbios, remote
access, DCOM, messenger, netmeeting, univ. plug n play,
and remote registry and you're off to a good start...
secruity-wise, anyway - bob

I seem to remember that CIAC site had a "best practices"
for securing systems, and that included (most) all OS's.

This why a book explaining in detail XP services would be
helpful. It would allow each user to customize their
system. I find that disabling or enabling specific
services can have consequences completely unknown.

For example, If I enable Indexing Service my computer
will not shut down. Windows Control Panel will not
maintain my my desktop resolution and frame rate now. I
suspect that this is due to some change I made in
Services. A complete guide to services would be very
useful.

Thank you, neo
