I have a Dell server, 3-com switch and 10 clients on my small network. The server (win sbs 2004)is 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0. The gateway for the server is 192.168.1.254. One of the clients is an XP pro connected to a westell dsl modem using an internal dhcp server and using ip 192.168.1.254. I am joining this client to the network and planning to use internet connection sharing. I am not going to connect the server or the network directly to the dsl. In fact I am planning to deploy a cisco pix firewall as well as using a client as a buffer for protection
Once I set up the second nic in the XP machine I was able to see either the LAN or the dsl but not both. I searched this and other sources and cannot determine if the ics feature of xp will provide the function I desire, and if so if the ip 192.168.0.1 will be a problem with the lan range 192.168.1.2-32 or the dsl with the same apparent range as the lan
Anybody have insight to this situation
Thanks (e-mail address removed)

In order for you to use ICS to provide internet service to your 9 clients, they
will have to get DHCP settings from the mini DHCP server, which is part of ICS,
running on the 10th client (the one with the DSL modem). So they will have new
ip addresses - which will make all 10 clients part of the 192.168.0/24 subnet.

IMHO, you will be a lot better off configuring your Cisco PIX firewall to
provide the internet connection sharing, and the protection. I don't think ICS
will help you.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks for your input. I kinda figured it was not going to be possible. My server is my dhcp and it is rquired for the way I have configured my sql server and application software. I will have to bite the bullet and get another line installed
