Icons that do nothing!

Hello All

I have XP home edition on a Pentium III. Somewhere along the line I appear to have a corruption, because nearly all the Icons in the Control Panel do absolutely nothing when you try to double click or 'open' them

Another strange thing - if I 'right-click' the open desktop, I am unable to get to 'properties' and thus disable my screen saver etc

Although not critical, it is very annoying - I thought that SP1 would have sorted me out, but it hasn't ... I have restored my system to December 2003 and everything works ok at that point, but obviously I don't want to have to go back that far

Any bright ideas or suggestions to resolve this tiresome problem would be very welcome

Thanks in advance

Does the problem occur in Safe Mode ? If it does not there might be
some other software that is loading during boot that is playing havoc
with the XP environment. Download and run Ad-aware 6 to remove any
spayware, malware etc

Try to do a clean boot. Use MSCONFIG from the RUN box to shut off
needless services and reboot
