Guys, I'm looking for a program that lets you change where the first
icon (and subsequent) icons appear on the desktop in Windows
(Explorer).

Think you can help?

I like Icon Layout restore
http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html
Icon Restore installs LAYOUT.DLL (along with the required registry entries)
from Microsoft. Two new options are added to the pop up menu that opens when
any Windows system icon (ex. My Computer) is right clicked. These options
are "Save Desktop Icon Layout" and "Restore Desktop Icon Layout".

I think the only problem with WinTidy is that it doesn't automatically
reposition new icons..

I've never used Wintidy, but I don't think not automatically positioning
icons is a problem.

I like to position my own icons, and they're grouped according to function.

Like L/+S, I like Icon Restore to put them back for me if mu desktop goes
manky, although with 98 SE, like hurricanes in hampshire, this hardly ever
happens ;-)

I've been using WinTidy for several years. When you create a new icon, you
simply need to remember to save it's position in the app. Never a problem
with it.

Thanks, Lew/+Silat! This is a great utility! I hate when Safe mode or a
screen res change messes up my desktop! No longer, I am safe. :-)

I'd like to know where Icon Layout restore installs itself, and where it
keeps the restore database file - just curious.

Dugie here is the original text from ICON RESTORE that Ive had for years.

<Save Desktop Icon Placement

Ever use Safe Mode? Ever use Safe Mode with a lot of desktop
icons? Bummer, huh? But there's a fix. Simply go to
http://borg.isc.ucsb.edu/ftproot/pub/windows/winnt40/RESKIT/Se
rver-Post_Installation/ and download LAYOUT.DLL and
LAYOUT.REG. Put layout.dll in \Windows\System (Windows 9x) or
\Windows\System32 (NT4, Win2K) and merge layout.reg by right-
clicking the file and choosing Merge from the context menu.

What you'll get is two new entries on the context menu for
desktop system icons like My Computer and My Documents. These
entries are Save Desktop Icon Layout and Restore Desktop Icon
Layout. So just right-click My Computer, save your layout, and
whenever you need to, restore it just as easily. Don't forget
to save them right away and whenever you make a change.
