Icons MIssing

I have windows XP home version. All of my Desktop ICONS are missing. All I have is my Background. I have tried to add new ones to it and they will not appear.

They were there when I shut off my computer the last time. There is a Chance my daughter did something as she said it was the way when she started it up.????

I tried to go to the restore but apparently that was shut off at one time.
