ICON's do not work

While installing an update to Norton Antivirus an error occurred hanging the
system requiring power off shutdown. Upon restart all icons except the
browser fail to work. They have the generic text file look and apparently
point to nothing. I tried using the "repair" option on the XP installation
disk but that didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?

I've had this problem several times. I don't know what
causes it, but I solved it twice with a system restore.

I solved it half-a-dozen times with a format.

(hint) If you can't get your Start Button to open (it's an
icon), to allow you access to your
programs/accessories/system tools menu,

you will have to format.

That would seem to be common sense... but I am AMAZED at how
often someone will say,

"Absolutely NOTHING is working on my computer! What should I
do?"

Short answer:

Format!

Try the .ICO file assoc. fix or perhaps system restore as "Talahasee"
susgested.
