Icons dissappear from notification taskbar

I am running XP Home with all the latest updates and 500 MB ram.

At times, icons I depend on being there disappear from the notification area
of my taskbar and the only way to restore them is too reboot. This seems to
occur after I have been running the PC for a long time without rebooting,
especially if I have many webpages minimized.

Is this a known bug, memory problem or something else. Can I avoid it
somehow?

Problems with the notification area are addressed on Kelly's excellent
website here:

I did look there, but because there is not clear explanation of the various
scripts, I cannot seem to find one that deals with the error I am having
which may be a memory problem.

If you think you're having a memory (RAM) problem, then test with
something like Memtest86 (www.memtest86.com). Download the precompiled
binary for Windows and make a bootable floppy. Boot with that floppy
and let the test run for an extended period of time, like overnight
(unless of course you get errors right away).

I had a similar problem...
OK, having a problem thats driving me nuts. I'm aware that there's a
feature that hides inactive taskbar icons, which I've had tried
turned both on and off.

All of my software starts, but the icons in the lower right corner of
my taskbar don't appear. Is this a known oops? Started happening a
week or so ago out of the blue. Can't think of anything I could have
installed that would cause this.

I used a script on the site you mentioned, and got my icons back. I'm
just curious as to why they'd disappear in the first place.
