Icon: Safely Remove Hardware

Recently I installed a Brother MFC-3420c printer under XP-Home with a USB
connection. All went well and the printer works properly.

For reasons I can't fathom though, XP insists on putting an icon in my system
tray labeled "Safely Remove Hardware" any time that the printer is powered
on. If I boot the computer with the printer off for example, the icon is not
present. When I turn on the printer though a couple of notes play and the
icon appears in the system tray. Clicking on it will allow me to uninstall
the printer. I can't understand why I want that in my system tray for the
next 5 years or whatever.

I contacted Brother who were quick to point out it's something XP is putting
there, not them. They don't know anything about it, and I suspect they don't
want to know either.

Is there some way to get rid of this? Does anyone know how it's getting
there in the first place?

Thanks...

It's part of the "hot-swappable" setup. You can "hot swap" usb peripherals
without re-booting the machine, but the accepted practice is to STOP them
first, which is what the icon is there for.

Thanks for the info. Is there some way to drive a stake through it's heart
though? I don't want to disconnect my printer until the day it dies and I
replace it.

Curiously, I do use other USB peripherals and none of them bring up this
icon. One is a UPS and another is my camera. From time to time I've also
used a USB mouse. None of them triggered this icon.

Thanks...

Same here, the only one that brings it up is when I plug my card reader
in, everything else is USB and connected at all times.

XP recognizes "removable" USB deices suh as card readers, Palm Hot Sync
cables, cameras, etc... and then displays the icon when it perceives the
item as a "removable device"

That may well be the intent, but in actuality I see the exact opposite
behavior from XP. I plug in my camera I do *not* get the icon. I plug in my
printer (which I consider to be a permanent device, not "removable") and I do
get the icon.

I'd like to have it work the way you describe, rather than the way it does.

hmmm, must be a tweak here that somebody will tell us about then because I
get just the opposite.
My USB printer doesn't produce the remove icon. My camera, palm, & MP3
player all do produce it.
Maybe it has something to do with specific drivers.
