Hello,
Have a I-Bot Orange Micro Desktop Camera installed, firewire connection.
Works without problem, installed 2 years ago.

My folders are setup to show on the left side "folders" and the rightt side
"details".
All left side items have a icon & text. all right side items have a icon &
text.
The icon & text relates to the item.
With the exception of the I-Bot. On the left side any icon can show with the
I-Bot,ie:
Realtek Audio, MP3 Player etc. Any Icon & I-Bot Orange Micro Desktop Camera
text.
On the right side "details" always the same a video camera icon & text.
If I open folders ie: My Documents, My Computer etc. each one will have a
different icon on the left side for the I-Bot. If I have 10 instances opened
there will be 10 different icons.
What's the reason for this behavior?
thank you.
take care.

Sounds like a corrupt icon cache to me

Got to:

START, MY COMPUTER, C:\, WINDOWS.
Delete 'ShellIconCache'
Restart Windows & all should be ok. Windows re-creates the file

The file above to delete is hidden so you need to do this to unhide it:

Open ANY folder
Click TOOLS menu, FOLDER OPTIONS
On the VIEW tab, click SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS
Click APPLY
Click OK

Navigate & delete the file in the Windows folder (mentioned above)

I hope this helps,

Hello,
Do not have 'ShellIconCache'

Have view set to show "SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS" & "SYSTEM FILES".

Do have " c\documents and settings\user name\local settings\application
data\icon cache.db (107018KB) and one listed in administrative account.

Using WindowsXP Home SP2 all updates.

Thank you for replying.

ShellIconCache is for Windows 98 and Windows Me.

In Windows XP it is a hidden file called IconCache.db
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db

Delete IconCache.db

IconCache.db is a Hidden file located in...
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Application Data

After deleting IconCache.db, it will be automatically recreated.

Using this method it doesn't matter if Show hidden files and folders is
selected or not.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data

Right click IconCache.db and select Delete.

Reboot your computer.

Hello,
Thank You for the information.
Have copied your reply and will keep it in my O.S. repair folder.
I increased the size of the icon cache, many months ago, could this have
caused the I-Bot icon actions?
Used a registry action from one of the MS-MVP sites, increases icon cache to
8192.
Once again, thank you for the information.

The icon cache size only stops the Desktop refresh mainly. If the icons keep
changing its because of a corrupt icon cache

Hello,
Thank you for your time and information.
Deleted the icon cache then rebooted. No change with the I-bot icon.
Noticed that there is another icon cache in "Adninistrator". This seems to
be the basic list at 3111KB as opposed to 107,537KB in my account.
Interesting little oddity, the I-Bot icon, been that way for two years
without listing errors.
Will live with the oddity.

<quote>
Using Registry Editor, add the Max Cached Icons string value with a value
data of 2000 to the following registry key, and then restart your computer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and 4096. The default
value is 500.
<quote>
from...
Icons randomly change to different icons
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/132668

The higher the number for Max Cached Icons; the more memory is used for
caching icons and the less memory is available for running applications. As
quoted above, MS recommends 2000. Of course it all depends on how much RAM
you actually have. Your mileage may vary.

I do not have an IconCache.db in...
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings

Probably because I have never logged on under the Administrator account. I
assume that you have?

"ShellIconCache is for Windows 98 and Windows Me" was an incorrect
statement.

Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0 and 2000 all have a ShellIconCache file.

My point was that Windows XP does not have a ShellIconCache file.

Hello,
Yes, logged in several times.
Checking the linkage, and after installing .net framework 1.1 and 2.0.
This has become an interesting happenstance, the I-Bot icon surprize.
As I mentioned this only happens with this icon and only in the folders frame.
Yesterday my pop-up stopper icon showed up, a large red stop sign.
Thanks again for taking the time to assist.
