Would someone please point me to information that explains
the different icons visible in the inbox? I am especially
interested in icons that are used when the message is
encrypted.

Red ribbon icon means signed, Blue lock is encrypted. Both mean it's signed
and encrypted. A Red ! means there is a problem with the certificate used to
sign it (expired etc) and a red x means the message was tampered with.
