| I'm wondering how, if possible, I can change the
| appearance of the icons on my computer's desktop.
Most shortcuts allow you to right-click on the icon, then choose
Properties and Change Icon to specify another icon from those on your
system.
For some icons which don't have a Change Icon option, you can use the
free Activicons utility from
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html to
switch those. You can also use it to browse through the icons in the
various ico, dll and exe files on your system (for creating your own
icons though, see same site at
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_if_tips.html for tips).
Finally, the icon appearance can depend on what Display settings you
have configured under Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display. For the
best appearance, you want to have your Colors set to either High Color
or True Color (on the Settings tab), and also to have the "Display
icons using all possible colors" option enabled (on the Effects tab).
