I'm running Windows XP and wish to retrieve a geneology
file that I backed up with windows 3.11 so that I can
recover data entered into that program. Are there any
tools for retrieving files backed up in Windows 3.11?

If the backup file was created by the geneology software, it was probably in
a proprietary format that only the geneology software can access.

If the file was backed up by a Microsoft backup utility - I don't remember
if such a utility was included in WFW - post back with the file extension
(the letters after the 'dot' in the file name). You may be able to access
the files from Windows 95 or 98.

At the very least, you can probably open the file in Notepad and retrieve
the raw information, though this will be tedious.

I'm not clear what you mean by "recover data". Basically, a lot depends
on the format of the original file. Does the geneology program you are
running now in XP have the ability to read the old file format? Is
there a way to convert the old file into plain text? If the makers of
your original geneology program are still around, contact their tech
support. Otherwise, post back with more details, including the names of
the programs.
