I have ALOT of issues with the inferior operating system
called Windows ME.
I have a Compaq Presario 5BW250 and according to Compaq it
was designed to run with Windows ME operating system,
which is factory installed. Compaq says that an
upgradation is not recommended because Windows XP is not
tested by Compaq in this computer. This model of
Presario is released before the launch of Windows XP.
hence, this model
is not designed for Windows XP.

According to Compaq when it is coming to drivers of
peripherals like modem, audio and video
hardware, again incompatibility will arise. All these
peripherals are
manufactured before the introduction of Windows XP. Hence
most of them
will not have a driver compatible to Windows XP. As the
net result, even
if I manage to install Windows XP in this computer, I may
miss certain functions like sound, modem access etc.

I am very much interested in Windows XP, if my hardware
meets minimum requirements suggested by Microsoft, I would
like to install a retail version.
But, I want to ensure I can download all required Windows
XP drivers for all the hardware like modem, audio/video my
scanner, printer and anything else I may need. Compaq told
me to contact Microsoft for this.
Thank you
Tammy

Compaq told you this because they do not support Windows XP on your
particular model.

Microsoft will not be able to help you. You will need to find out what
manufacturer (other than Compaq) made your individual components (video card
chipset, modem chipset, etc) and see if their are available drivers
yourself.

Miss, my recommendation to you is as follows; your pc
processor runs at least at 550Mhz or more(if not you
better be a patient person)
Have 128MB of ram
2GB Hard Drive Disk or more
A SVGA(Super Video Graphics Array) moniter
Try to find all the components in your pc and write them
down, after which your going to want to compare this list
with the Microsoft's HCL (Hardware Compatibility List)
{http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/search.mspx}
if you go to device manager in your pc it should do the
trick!
good luck!
