I want to stop a toolbar from opening automatically

Whenever I open a Word doc, new or existing, the control toolbar opens
automatically. I never use it and really want the screen real estate back.
I'm sick of closing it manually but can't figure out how to get it to stop
opening. I don't even know why it started in the first place.
