I want to number pages in a document 1, 2, 3, 3a, 4, 5, 6, 6a, .

I am using Word 2002. I am using a document provided which I need to fill
in. If my information is longer than the space provided, I need to add a
new page, eg 4a, so that the questions on the original document remain with
their original page numbers. I have tried using section breaks, but that does
not let me change the format - there is a message at the top of the
section"Same as previous". Even if I could change with a section break, it
does not seem to cover "3a" as an option to put in.
 
You can switch off same as previous in a header or footer by clicking the
icon on the header footer toolbar - it's probably the 8th button along and it
looks like two documents with an arrow snaking underneath them.

You can then put anything you like in your footer.

Insert another section break and switch off same as previous for the new
section.
Using the format page number button on the header/footer toolbar - it has a
hand holding a hash (pound) symbol, you can tell Word to start your page
numbering at, say, 4, and then insert a page number into that footer.

It's complicated, but then what you are trying to do isn't exactly a usual
thing!

sThanks. That has moved me forward, but it did not answer my question about
putting 3a as a page number. Can you do this, or not? If not, I suppose I
could start page number as 3 so there are two page 3s, then write in 'a'
after the 3 by hand!.
 
I believe that once you unlink the header or footer you are free to add
whatever you want in there, for instance you can add page 3a in the footer of
the page you are adding.
