I WANT to log in automatically with Windows Messenger

Unlike most folks, I actually WANT to start up and log in using my .NET Passport to Windows Messenger automatically. Here's my probelm:

On my PC I have an administrator account and a limited account. In the limited account is where I experience the problem. I log in to my limited account and Windows Messenger loads, however it does not automatically sign me in. I have to do it manually. I've linked my Windows XP account to my .NET account, yet I still can't get Windows Messenger to automatically log me in each time I start Windows. I have Norton AnitiVirus 2003 running, but I have made sure Norton is not monitoring Windows Messenger (I understand that this may be part of the problem). I just can't get Windows Messenger to do what I want it to do - which is log in with my .NET account automatically each time I log in to Windows.

I've gone the rounds trying to find anything in the KB on this issue, but all I find is people wanting to disable or unistall Windows Messenger. I don't want to do that - I want to use the program.

Please advise.

Greetings JB,

To fix this, make sure the Windows Messenger isn't running, then start the registry editor by
clicking Start, then Run, type "regedit" and then click OK. Navigate to the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService key (they look like folders), click the
MessengerService key, then choose the Edit menu, and then choose Delete.

Then restart Windows Messenger, you may need to enter your credentials one more time and
after this, it should automatically log you in as per normal.

Any other answer that doesn't involve hacking into the registry? I should also note that this occured after I did a clean install of XP. Don't know if that has anything to with my problem...

Hi,

The alternative I can give you is instead of going into the registry yourself, simply
download and run the following .reg file:

I decided to edit the registry. I'm still experiencing the same problem. Basically, Windows Messenger will not remember my password even when I check the box that is for remembering the password.

Did I mention that I am running the XP firewall with this as well?
