I want to legitimise my XP

Some time ago, I bought a used computer, and now believe the licence key to
be some kind of cracked version. I'd like to buy a genuine key and validate
it properly etc, but if I do, is there any way of installing the key without
completely reinstalling XP etc? I REALLY don't want to have to do that, as I
have so much stuff on the machine.

Thanks

Yes. Do a repair install. BUT their is risk in any thing you do, so if
it ain' broke, don't fix it.

Heh - normally I'd agree. But I can't get updates from MS, Antisypyware etc,
so I'd like everything to be OK.

Use automatic update.
Antisypyware

Piece of BETA sh*t.

etc,
so I'd like everything to be OK.

Of course, you can do a repair install but back up your data first and
be prepared for the possibility that it may lead to a clean install if
something goes wrong.

The page at the link above has links to all the updates you need to
WinXP SP2, and the download right off of MS's servers.

Defender (formerly MS Antispyware) is a BETA and should be use in a
non-testing environment.

And with MS's pisspoor track record on security it is like having the
GWB as the defender of truth, justice, and the American Way!

This should have said "shouldn't be used"

Any one of those d/l mentioned at the above link comes back w/message:

"so and so could not be saved because the source file could not be read.
Try again latter or contact the server administrator."

What gives? I tho't this might solve my problem too.

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

I recently had a similar situation occur and used the phone in to validate
option. Microsoft were very helpful and after a few minutes was up and
running 100% legal.

Since that page seems to require a login, something I do not want , I will
guess that site refers to this procedure:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328874
That procedure is often mistakenly thought a solution.
If so, that procedure is for Volume License new AND old.
In any case it will not work if they are dissimilar such as Volume License
and retail, OEM and retail, full and Upgrade etc.

Unless they are the same, a Repair Installation is required to change the
dissimilar key types.

If you have the original and/or geniune XP discs It should not be a problem
to you. How do you BACK UP the product verification outside your hard disc -
eg if you replace your hard disc is the info on that or your BIOS ?

When you buy a used PC. First step is to wipe the drive and install the
OS you want to use.

You must be mad. If you can work with it then it must be legal. What
is the advantage of paying $200 to your local store who will only blow
it away or give it to another rich jerk who doesn't deserve it.

XP2 is only $89 tops at most office stores. Well worth it.

Do not confuse "mad" with integrity.
If the installed Windows is not legitimate integrity suggests the OP make it
right.

What the local store does with the $ paid by the OP is not relevant any more
than what the local grocery store does with your $ you pay for food.

Exactly! MS has no integrity!

make it right.

No. What MS calls legit isn't necessarily legit. Like their BS PA
message about how XP has been installed too many times, when it can be
installed as many times as one wants or needs.

Seems integrity is lost on MS, as they have left this message as a part
of PA since XP was in BETA!

Copyrighted material is not the same as physical groceries, and you know
it. Seems your integrity is pretty lacking too!
