I have a P11 - 350 with 384meg ram
I have Win98se installed at the moment and would like to upgade to Windows
XP pro on it.
Will I have any problems doing this?...Is it Just a matter of putting in the
Cd and Installing it over win98, I have a Voodoo 2 card and I realise there
are no XP Drivers for it so I guess I will have to fiddle with that one. But
other than that I think all my Hardware should be compatable. I realy dont
want to uninstall Win98se, as I have quite a bit of other software Installed
and dont want to reInstall it all.

Thanks to you all

Yep that is possible.
It is always a good idea to backup all important files before making a major
change in case something should go wrong. (like your video card causes an
error)

Have you run the upgrade advisor.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/advisor.mspx

Purchase the upgrade version start the computer and put the cd in and choose
to install then choose Upgrade not Full install and all your files and
downloads should be left intact.

Kevin is right. Trying to install XP on this machine
over Win 98se is a recipe for disaster. Leave well
enough alone... and when the time is right to upgrade
to a newer computer, then go for XP,

Depends, first question. Why do you need XP? Second question. How much
hard drive space you have free?

You may have to get another video card with xp drivers.

Several sites list links for drivers for the Voodoo 2 card on Windows
XP, such as http://www.guru3d.com/files/3dfx/

Your PII 350 with 384 mb of RAM will not set any speed records with
Windows XP but it should not be unbearably slow either.

Make sure you have lots of free space on your hard drive (at least 2+
gigabytes for the XP Install)

Good luck

Hi,

I don't know if I am having the exact same problem as you,
but I just posted something similar. Did you notice
whether your problem started at about the time of a
patch. I am wondering whether there might be some problem
with a patch because both my computers started the problem
at the same time and the only change recently is that I
have patched up the OS, and I installed a probram called
Acronis True Image. I don't think that the problem is
Acronis because the problem continued on one machine after
I removed the software.

Provided the hardware is adequate, that is what you do. You need
something over a 400MHz CPU; *more* than the 'recommended' 128 MB RAM
(say 256) and 5 GB free disk space to make it worth while. And should
remove (not just disable) any AV, utility suites like Norton, and CD
burning software. Then run the CD from the present system, enter
Install, continue with Upgrade.

And first Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

I would also consider whether you in fact *need* Pro rather than Home,
coming from Win98. See
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for the list of things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will
support ten simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five

If you see no need for any of these Pro only matters, save money and get
Home. The systems are otherwise identical, don't spend money on Pro
just to feel macho

I am interested in knowing why everyone thinks Dell makes such a good
computer when reading a large percentage of the post dealing with computer
problems and issues unsolved after talking to Dell Tech support.

If I were to go and buy a factory built computer it would be a HP, I have
had several of them before starting to build for myself and family because
the major companies bundle so much garbage with there OEM software.

I am sure a lot of these post on here deal with all the factory builds I
just see a lot of them stating they have a Dell and the problems they have
with Dells Tech & Repair Support.

No offence just curious.

The "$400 Dell" was not an endorsement only an example. The OP's machine
is marginal for an XP install and in reality it they want XP, just buy a
box with it already installed, otherwise don't break what you have
working. :-)

You shouldn't. My wife runs XP on a similar machine--P2 400MHz
with 256MB and it runs XP fine. It's no speed demon, but it's
adequate for what she does,

But to be sure there are no other issues, first run the Microsoft
Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

Yes.

I don't know the situation with that. You *might* need to buy a
new video card.

But other than that I think all my Hardware
should be compatable. I realy dont want to uninstall Win98se, as I

OK, but be aware that there are no guarantees that an upgrade
always works perfectly. However unlikely, it's always possible
that something might go wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be
sure you have a backup of anything you can't afford to lose
before beginning.

I completely disagree. My wife runs XP on a P2-400 with 256MB,
and it runs fine (and I know several others with similar
experiences)--not even close to a disaster. It's not a speed
demon, but it's far from being unusable.

A P2-350 with 384MB should produce approximately the same
performance.

XP can run fine on lower end hardware. As long as you aren't
planning to play "State-of-the-Art" games or extensive multimedia
operations. Best to do a couple of checks first, before getting
underway. First, check the Vendor's website for any notations
about running your particular model using XP. Run Belarc advisor
or Everest Home Edition to get a comprehensive listing of what
hardware is in the computer. Then check that XP drivers are
available. Pay particular attention to which Chipset is used on
the PC. Finally, determine how many revisions down level your
BIOS firmware is. In some cases, ACPI compliancy and other
XP type features will work better if you have a more recent BIOS
version. (Normal cautions about Flashing Apply). Run the XP
advisor to locate any non-compliant applications and remove
them before upgrading. Some are a real PITA to remove after
the upgrade is completed. Always have your personal data
backed up or have a complete system partition image (Just in
case, the upgrade goes badly.)

I completely agree with Ken, your computer does not have to be the newest &
biggest computer on the market.
If your present computer serves the purpose that you have it for, then as
long as it meets the minimum requirements, then XP will only make it more
stable and work that much better.

Thanks for agreeing, but I just wanted to add the caution not to
take that meeting the "minimum requirements" too literally. 64MB
of RAM (the official minimum) is nowhere near enough, and even
128MB is insufficient for acceptable performance. I wouldn't
recommend that anyone run XP with less than 256MB.
