I have been stopped from downloading updates from the auto updates site at MS
because of a discrepancy in my license number.

I have now gone and bought a retail copy of XP to obtain a license but am
being told that the license number is invalid.

Has my OS somehow blocked the ability to enter a perfectly legal license
number?

I have just spent a lot of money acqiring this retail copy of XP, please
help :)

You'll need to proceed with a "Repair Install"
using your new Windows XP CD and Product Key.

Microsoft has a product key update tool. It looks like the only way to get
it is to participate in the "Genuine Windows Offer" through the WGA program.

I cannot find it anywhere on the MS download site. It is mentioned in the
above link. It looks like you will have to do a repair install. Make sure
you have a verified backup before starting.

That should teach you! Screw going through added code to patch your
computer that adds more risk to the patching process with Common Sense
Computing.

Registration is optional and doesn't make it completely unique to you.
Have you activated yet? When you activate you are also given the option
to register.
