Have you tried Google?

The full blown Outlook started off as a mail client that connected to
Microsoft Exchange servers.

The predecessor to Exchange was Microsoft Mail, which used the concept of a
"post office" which in reality was a collection of files found on a file
server.

Microsoft purchased the email package circa 1992 from a company called
"Network Courier" and subsequently rebranded it Microsoft Mail. It
initially started out as a DOS menu driven app (circa 1988) and was ported
to Windows circa 19900-1991.

I know because in a former life I was a mail administrator who was part of
the Network Courier / Mail migration (merely changed the name of the
product).
