I thought this would be a no brainer

Whenever I right click on the desk top and select "New" option it takes
forever for the menu to appear. I'm assuming its due to the 40 or so menu
items available. How do I remove these selections from the "New" menu
options. It has almost all of my programs listed and I only need one or two.
Please if someone can help I would be forever in your debt. I've searched
high and low for a resolution but I guess I'm looking in the wrong place
and/or searching for the wrong key words.

To remove items from the explorer new menu:

- Open Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
- Search for ShellNew
- Delete the entire ShellNew branch for every file type not wanted.
- Continue Searching for more items.
- Close registry editor and reboot if necessary

TweakUI from microsoft and X-Setup from xteq.com also offer easier
solutions.

You guys are awesome! I knew it was an easy fix once I was told how to do
it. lol
Thank you very much

Click: Start, click: Run, type: regedit
Then click the OK button.
When the Registry Editor opens click the + to the left of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
to expand. Go to the following keys and see if you can locate the relevant
subkey, then right click it and left click Delete.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Also, to speed up the menu: (and this WILL gain some menu speed) Right
click an empty place on your desktop, left click Properties. When the
Display Properties window opens click the Appearance tab, click the Effects
button, and remove the checkmark to the left of the option: Use the
following transition effect for menus and tool tips. Click the OK button,
then click the Apply and OK buttons on the remaining window.

Also, you might want to download and install TweakUI for Windows XP, one the
Microsoft Powertoys for Windows XP at:

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After installing TweakUI, open it (Start button/Programs/Powertoys for
Windows XP/TweakUI for
Windows XP). After you open TweakUI for Windows XP, in the right pane
you'll see a listing for MOUSE. Click on it. Then in the left pane you'll
see a slider for MENU SPEED. Slide it towards Fast, then click the Apply
and OK buttons. You might have to do this a few times, using different
slider settings until you find the speed that's right for you.

<snip good stuff>

to speed up everything (at some cost to the pretty appearances) go to my
computer, properties, advanced, performance settings button, and
'optimise for performance'. This turns off all the eye candy, and speeds
things up a lot, especially with older machines/graphics cards.

Most of my clients prefer the Classic Start Menu option, and the Use Classic
Windows Folder options. Then they want to be rid of the annoying Balloon
Tips, all of which does improve performance. The first day I started using
Windows XP I got rid of that Fisher Price looking eye candy, and performance
improved immediately. Also, the Classic Start Menu is more easily
customizable, and takes up less of the valuable screen real estate. The
clients whom I recommend the Windows XP default Start menu to, are the ones
who know very little about how to use Windows, and need those basic newbie
links and hints.
