You know that infamous 'Blue Screen of Death'? Well, I just learned
about it the hard way. What does it mean? Now my laptop wont come on.The
screen isnt turning on at all what so ever.Nothing! Will popping in a
boot disc get it sorted?

Paul.

BSOD means the system has gone down a Dead End street. An
event or call caused the whole Operating System to Halt. What
you see are Register contents that a developer can use to analyze
what happened, what caused it. Usually(?) BSOD's are attributed
to drivers and of those most likely Video. If you can capture the
displayed information it can help to isolate the cause. Solutions
vary depending on the displayed info.

Hi Paul,

What does the blue screen say is wrong?

If the screen isn't turning on, you probably have a hardware issue, and
a boot disc won't help. try unplugging your laptop, removing the
battery and holding down the power button for 10 seconds, then
re-connect the battery and power and try turning it on. In order to
actually fix the problem you'll need to know what the message in the
blue screen says because you can get these errors for a variety of
reasons.

what i was thinking of doing was just insert a boot disc i got with the
machine and see if that can re-install windows for me.then i can copy
my info to an external hard drive followed by an entire format of the
computers hard drive.will this sort it all out, do you think?
Thanks man.

dunno because it crash and shut down without giving me a chance to read
it...am i screwed?

If you do that, you will lose everything, including your data and any
programs you may have installed after you got the computer. Restore
disks wipe out everything and return your computer to the state is was
when you bought it.

If you can get into Safe Mode (hit F8 when the computer boots up and
choose Safe Mode from the menu), and copy your data over to an external
hard drive

Hi,

No, not necessarily. Hit F8 as the system initially boots and try Safe mode.
If that fails, try again with "safe mode with command prompt". Alternately,
if both fail and SP2 is installed, choose the option to disable automatic
restart on system failure. This will still cause the blue screen, but the
system message should remain on screen where you can jot it down and report
back.

If you did a reinstall of XP, continue past the point where it gives you a
warning about having two Operating systems on the same drive. Then at the
point where it asks you where you want to install XP you will have the option
to 'leave current file system intact (no changes)'
If you select that option, instead of format, then it will uninstall the
existing Operating system and install the new version and all your DATA will
remain on the disc. Any apps that place an entry in the registry will still
be there but wont run until you reinstall them (MS Office is an example)
Other apps that don't modify the registery should still work and just place
the shortcut on the desktop for them. They wont be listed in the 'All
programs' menu though. To get rthem listed you will have to reinstall the app.

What do you mean by the laptop won't come on? Not powering up at all is
different than won't boot. If the former send it in for service. If
the latter follow some of the troubleshooting solutions given by Rick
Rogers earlier.
