I need to format my hardrive and I'll also be upgrading
my mother board and processor. My question is...how many
times am I able to activate windows XP before it won't
let me, I changed the hardware configuration the other
day and it made me activate it again, when it wasn't a
big change. I just bought xp this year and have only had
it on this system but I format my hard drive on a yearly
basis. Any information would be helpful

You can activate Windows XP (if it is Retail - Not OEM) as many times as you
wish as long as it is on only one PC at a time. Meaning if you activate it
on PC "A", then you cannot activate it on PC "B" without first removing it
(or destroying, etc) PC "A".

However, if you bought an OEM copy of Windows XP (No Box or it came WITH
your PC) - then legally you cannot activate it on a NEW PC ever - it is tied
to the compnents to which you first installed it on. Changing a FEW
components over time is acceptable and may not result in a need to
reactivate.

BTW - not sure if the email provided was real or not - but if it was, you
want to consider NOT posting on a newsgroup with it. You may start
receiving lots more spam emails now - some claiming to be Microsoft. They
are not.
