I have WINXP Home Edition installed on my PC. My O.S.was upgraded from
WindowsME to WINXP H.E. about a month ago. WINXP was never Activated, my
friend who installed it, never found the Product Key,so it is unregistered
also. I went to get online last night, & there was the Activation Window
asking me if I wanted to Activate, I clicked, No remind me later, & clicked
Next,it just logged me off. The only way I could get online was by clicking
on visit the: Microsoft Activation Assistance Web Site. I have my Welcome
window,but I can't go any further!! I need someone to tell me,HOW & What I
have to do to back-up, save, copy to disk, whatever it is I need to do,so I can
uninstall it & install the one I just bought!! THE one that has the Product
Key & Disk. I know I'm asking alot from someone but I really don't know what
to do,how to do it, or where to start!!!! My friend left me hanging, he's not
to be found, & he's the only one I know, that knows how to do this kind of
stuff. So" PLEASE" will someone help me??????

If you did not activate windows within the 30 day period, you are locked out
of it permanently.

Do yourself a favor and never let that "friend" near your computer again.

You might try booting from the new disc and trying a Repair installation,
but I am not sure if this will work on a non-activated install, as I have
never tried.

Have a look and see if and entry on the menu 'Activate Windows' is
present in Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

Please remove obvious from email address if emailing.

If you have a legal disk now with a new product key you should be able to do
a repair install by booting to the new XP disk and using the product key
when prompted. JJ

My goodness, did your friend have any credible track record that made his
suggestions a viable choice? I don't have any suggestions other than tell
your friend he/she needs to get their information in order before dispersing
it to their friends.
Looks like you are screwed. Hope you had a backup of your important data
otherwise, stop all operations on the computer and if the data is very
valuable let a professional retrieval specialist have a go at getting the
information back. It will not be cheap.
