I have Windows XP, but for some reason I do not have Word. I am desperate, I
really need to get it, but I don't understand why I have to pay money when I
already have XP.

Microsoft Word, which is available as a standalone program or as part of
the Microsoft Office suite of programs, does not automatically come with
Windows XP. Windows is an operating system. Word/Office is an
application program. You have to purchase Word/Office separately.

Neither Word nor the Office suite that includes it has ever been a part of
any Windows operating system. Many computer manufacturers and vendors do
install Office or Works Suite (which includes Word) on new computers, which
may mislead many users, but Windows does not include any Office
applications. As others have suggested, Windows does include WordPad, which
may meet your needs.
