I Need Immediate Attention (PLEASE!!)

Can someone please help me get around this?

1. Backed up my system disk image using Norton Ghost
since my system hard drive was failing.
2. Just replaced the failing drive (WD 30 GB) with a new
drive (WD 80 GB).
3. Successfully partitioned and formatted (NTFS) the new
drive using Recovery Console (which was booted from
Windows XP install disk).
4. Used DOS version of Norton Ghost (booted from floppy)
to restore the backed up system image to the new
partitioned/formatted hard drive. All was successful here
too.
5. NOW here is the PROBLEM!! When I boot up to the new
system drive (Drive C), it goes as far as if it is going
to go into Windows XP OS, but comes up with a
statement 'HIT A KEY TO REBOOT'. I am in an infinite loop
and can't get into Windows XP (the restored image on the
new drive).

Please help me understand what might be happening and how
to work around it (I hope!). Shouldn't have anything to
do with Windows Activation at this point, would it?
 
You will need to do a repair install on the new hard drive. The reason for
this, is that ghost cannot be used to clone working copies of XP.
 
I did not clone anything, as far as I know. Just took a
Ghost saved system partition image and overwrote it to the
new partition on the new drive. I am not familiar with
Repair Install. Can you give me a little guidance? Also,
will this mess up my image restore so that I lose all that
I had backed up. Please advise further. Thanks in
advance.
 
Ghost 2003 (comes with NSW 2003). I was just reviewing
Symantec's Ghost knowledgebase and may have found a clue.
Here is what they say. Could this be my problem? I am
restoring a 30 MB image to an 80 MB partition.

Situation:
After you write an image of a Windows 2000/XP installation
to a computer and restart the computer, the computer fails
to boot into Windows. Instead, it continuously restarts.

Disk signature
This problem can happen when Ghost does not reinitialize
the disk while restoring a partition. This problem is more
likely to occur when the disk and controller are the same
in the source and destination computers, but the partition
sizes or layout are different.

To resolve the problem, repeat the restore process, this
time using the -FDSP switch:

ghost.exe -fdsp

The -FDSP switch prevents Ghost from automatically forcing
a disk initialization. For more information on Ghost
switches, read the document Switches: Alphabetical list of
switches.
 
I'd try, from RecoveryConsole prompt : FIXMBR

Boot the computer with the Windows XP CD and do a Repair Install as
per the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

That will preserve the installed applications, user data files, and
program configuration settings. Windows Updates will all have to be
done again.

Also, for future reference with Norton Ghost, try to use the image to partition
option instead of image to disk. It allows for flexibility in partition
management and reduces bootup errors when going to a larger disk than the
previous one from which the image was made.

Putting an O/S system to a new hard drive is a clone of that O/S

You can only use ghost to restore the system to the original hard drive from
which it was taken.
