I bought my computer from a business Guy who was closing his business. I
need to know how to change the name of the user folder it was created with.
(in C:/ ) documents /settings .. the name he used is not very appropriate..
but when i try to rename it, it says it is a " windows system folder and is
required to run windows properly. cannot be changed or deleted" .... also ...
everything i save ... everything i do automatically goes into this folder
...... HELP--
Thanks
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
You cannot change the name of the folder as it has already been registered
as the "documents and settings" folder specific to that user. You can make a
new administrator account and shift all necessary files and data to that.

As for "everything" going to that folder, you can change that using the drop
down box for "save to".

Rebecca;
The easiest way is to create a new account and then copy the data from the
old to new account:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151
You must open the new profile at least once before you can copy the data.
The old profile may be safely deleted from User Accounts once you are sure
the new profile works OK.

But, this is a new computer for you.
You should perform a Clean Installation:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm
This will remove all garbage by the previous owner.

You can edit your system environment variables. then your don't need to drop
down all the time.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend, your wisest
course of action would definitely be to format the hard drive and start
fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may
have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because
the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

However, to fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP,
you can use Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).

If I bought a used computer, the first thing I would do with it would be to
reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer
has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing,
what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with
somebody else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and
I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

thank you Ken , this is exactly what I want to do, however, this gentleman
forgot to give me the windows XP installation disk, therefore I don't think I
can do this... without purchasing a new windows xp .. and I dont really see
the need to do that if there is a way I can change the user acct name as I
would like to. I know that if my hard drive were ever to crash, i would have
to purchase it anyways.

thank you for your reply. i tried creating a new user acct, and i copied all
of the data into it already, but I still can not delete the old one. windows
wont let me, says it needs it for it to run properly.

thanks, sunny, but i already knew that .. i guess i may have worded my
question wrong... thank anyways for taking the time to reply, to what seemed
like a "stupid" question haha

You'e welcome. If he "forgot" to give you the CED, he probably "forgot" to
give you the COA too.

The upshot is that, without these, you don't have a legitimate copy of
Windows.

Rebecca;
How are you attempting to delete it?
Log into an account other than the one you want to delete.
It must have Administrator access.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel.
Select the user you want to delete.
Click "Delete the account"
