I have been using Microsoft works calendar, but it is painfully slow to open
on start-up; and if disabled from start-up it's easy to forget and overlook
entries. Are there any freebies that work well?

TIA

When I get home I'll send you the links I got when I asked the same
question. After much install/uninstall I went back to MS Works Calendar (you
can install it separately) for Win95. It does the job for me. Haven't found
a freebie yet that did the same job.

I have only just started using Sunbird:

What, 6.5 Mb download for just a calendar?

I suggest TClockEx v1.4.2
The calendar shows a month at a time, with the present day highlighted
for easy reference. It is also possible to highlight certain days and
change the first day of the week.
Other options determine how and where the calendar window appears on
the screen.
Includes week numbers (determined according to ISO8601) on the
calendar. Weeks are always numbered beginning with Monday, regardless
of the day chosen to start the calendar week. This is in line with
ISO8601.

BTW, TClockEx is more than a calendar.

I'll second this. I don't know how detailed a calendar you are after but
this has it all for me.

* transparent window makes calendar integrate into your desktop
* multiple day notes
* pop-up reminders

Thanks - just downloaded and trying to get my head around it at moment.
Alarm option only in minutes????? Seems odd.

Ho Fred

You've probably got a host of ideas now and no double you'll find most
are crap.

The ones I tried were
Rainlender 0.21.2
Abel Alarm Clock 3.5
Citrus Alarm 1.05
amd
RMP2 which means Remind me Please Version 2.

Fred, simplify your needs and almost any calendar will do. I suggest
you use open source ones. Consider mozilla's as you can easily export
the data from it to other calendars should the need arise.

If you're going to pay I would suggest you get a palmpilot. The zire 21
is pretty cheap yet solid.

I really like "Time and Chaos" -- they have an old version that's easy to
use and now freeware.

Seconded. There's very little software on my computer that I felt was
worth paying for, but T&C was one. I do wish I hadn't paid for the
latest version though - the version that's now freeware is far better
imo.

I have no experience with TClock but, you may be comparing apples to
oranges. Sunbird:

- is pre-release (meaning file size & mem usage are still not defined)
- uses standard text file .ics for calendars (rfc2445)
- supports webdav servers

Sunbird is still young (and fragile) however, on the face of it, as a
standalone it does a decent job. It is Sunbird's ability to download,
publish and/or subscribe to multiple calendars in an industry-wide,
standardized format sure makes this one to keep an eye on.

Back to Ron's request...

I've been using Palm Desktop for about 4 years now. I like it a lot and
would recommend it normally but...since you're in a MS world, have you
tried Outlook express? I'm not too familiar with it but apparently it
has a nice integration of email and calendaring. It's "free" in that
it's bundled into most versions of the Windoze OS.

Just to note that

1) Palm desktop, the calendar/contact/organizer sw is *free* to use
2) Not only is it *not* necessary to buy hardware but, it is off-topic.

Sparky,

TClockEx:

and TClock

(page is in Japanese, but program interface isn't... at least the copy
that I use) are two similar, but different programs.

FWIW, I use and prefer the latter.

Jeez, so many are *nearly* there, but all fall down in one respect or
another.
Been using the Mozilla calendar for ages, absolutely what I want, but
huge, and takes forever to open if used at Windows startup. Sunbird
seems to be the same thing, but different name.
Couldn't get on with Rainlender, not what I wanted. Citrus and Abel
alarms neither. Tclock, no.
Event Manager has 90% of what I want and small, but at present can't
repeat every X day of the month except for first and last week. Time and
Chaos similarly almost there, but try to get an event repeating every X
day of the month forever is impossible, you need to keep clicking the
"until the following date" month until you get fed up with it. Seems the
best so far, but if Event Manager gets its repeat options sorted, that's
the one I will go for

You can also click the "until the following date" *year*, which makes
it a bit faster. I agree, a repeat-forever option would be good.
