I just want to stop the current setup

Brad

I am in the middle of upgrading from XP Home Edition to XP
Pro.

This is an HP Pavilion which came with no recovery CDs,
and the hidden recovery partition is no longer
working. "Fdisk /mbr" did NOT fix it.

I forgot to disable my Anti-Virus and Firewall before I
began the upgrade from HE to PRO.

Now I am in a "forever loop" in setup. I can't get
into "Safe Mode"; I can't run a "Repair" from the CD;
because everywhere I turn it says "setup is already in
progress".

Where is the "setup flag" everybody is checking? There
must be a file somewhere indicating that setup is in
progress. I just want to go in with "Recovery Console"
long enough to rename it, so I can reboot, disable my Anti-
virus and firewall, and start the upgrade over.

I have read lots of threads about looping setup, but no
one has mentioned how to break the loop!

Because of HPs distibution policy, a clean install will
mean the loss of all the "extras", and a real mess, since
my hidden recovery partition is broken.

Brad

Hello Brad,
You do not mention where you are in setup process, but there isn't good way
to break out of the setup process. Since you in the middle of setup you
have a mixture of old files with new files.
Some of this depends on where you are in setup, but you cannot restart
setup, you are in the middle of setup.
You may be able to boot to recovery console to attempt to disable
Anti-Virus and Firewall. There is no file to rename, this is either a
boot.ini setting or a registry setting, but even that is not very helpful
since the upgrade is already taking place. You do not have an OS to boot
into except the one in the middle of an upgrade. You are copying files
over the files that are in the same folders, there isn't a rool-back option
for this upgrade option.

If you are as far as GUI mode and you have sufficient time before the
reboot starts, you can try to do shift-F10 to open a CMD prompt.
You can attempt to run Regedit to edit the system.sav and software, sav
files to stop the anti-virus and firewall from loading. You may want to
place support call for help with that.
Thanks,

Thanks Darrell, that helps!

Actually, I was totally unable to "break in" using F10 or
any other method, and the recovery console is not much
help here either...,

But, I was able to to a fresh install into a brand
new "windows" directory using a new name, so I can
use "multi-boot" to switch between the clean install (with
all my other software "invisible"), and the old install
still in the middle of "setup". If I can get McAfee to
tell me how to kill their anti-virus by "crossing over" to
the old Registry Hives, I may be able to complete the
broken setup.

One problem I am having though, when I start "regedit" in
the new install, the options to load or unload a different
hive are "greyed out".

Not sure if it is even possible to edit the old registry.

If not, I guess this will be a good opportunity to cleanup
a lot of stuff. :-)

Hello Brad,
To load another registry let's try these steps:

1. Start Regedit from the newly installed version of Windows XP.

2. Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (this has to be selected registry key for the load hive
option to be available)

3. On the Registry menu, click Load Hive, and then open the following
registry file in the original Windows XP installation:

%SystemRoot%\System32\Config\System

4. Assign the file a name other than System (such as "Test") in the Key
Name dialog box. NOTE: The file must be open before you change the key
name.

Thanks,
