I've read all the information here on this subject, and done everything
that's been subjested. Still, I'm without an Administrator account. I'm not
saying you're wrong, I may be totally inept. Here are the facts, and results
of the things I've tried.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, it's a work computer and on a network (no
server, just internet and printers)
When I start the computer in safe mode (F8 at start up) I show steven as my
sign in name, When I change it to administrator and hit enter, it tells me to
check the password and domain names.
When I go to start and then run, CMD I get
C:\documents and settings\steven>
I know some of you out there are saying the administrator account cannot be
deleted but I'm pretty lost here.
If anyone can help me PLEASE do. If possible can you explain what to do as
if you were explaining it to you 3 year old?

Thank you very much!!

Dave Geiser

if you have not specifically assigned a password to the admin account it's
blank
just hit enter for the password.

Thanks for the response, steven might be the administrator account, however,
it hasn't any administrator ablities and no way to change them

Yup.... Tried that one.. Didn't work!

Don't try it in Safe mode. Boot normally, and if you have the Welcome
screen, press Ctl-Alt-del twice. Then enter "administrator" as the user.
(If you don't use the Welcome screen, just put "administrator" in the
User name box). BTW, when you say you are on a network, what SORT of
network?

Gordon,

I did do the Ctl-Alt-del twice thing. When I re-typed administrator and hit
enter it tells me I'm not able to do that.

I'm not sure what kind of network.. A simple one I thing

So you have only the adminstrator account with admin authority?
if the suggestions don't seem to help, I would backup your data, and do a
clean install.
as it appears that someone has deleted your admin account.
I suggest you activate a backup admin account seperate from the usual admin.

You cannot delete the administrator's account, but it can be renamed. Have
you checked the user accounts on the pc, if so, how many are on it and what
are the accounts?

Talk to the Network Administrator.

What is the *exact* message?

Anywho, two ideas:

1. Make sure when you are logging in, you *don't* log on to a domain.

2. If no joy, run Belarc Advisor to get a list of all the accounts (and
what types they are) on your PC. You may download a copy from:

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Maybe it will jog your memory.

Or just do net users at a Command Prompt...

Good catch, I missed that, even though it was clearly typed in.
Yes talk to your system administrator! and or your pc help dept

=======================/

You change the username to administrator and hit Enter, but you also need to
provide the password for the administrator account. If you don't know that
password you obviously won't be able to log in using the administrator
account. This password was specified when Windows was installed, and as far
as I know cannot be left blank (though it could have been changed--by an
administrator--after installation).
