I am trying to regain some features lost during an unsuccessful attempt at a
Repair Reinstall of WindowsXP. I can use the Start > Search > Quickfinder
but not Start > Search > Files or Folders. Can anyone help? (My
SystemRestore is not working either, so I do not have the option of reverting
to an earlier - and happier - state). However, I'm just trying to fix the
Start problem for now.

Can anyone help?

Hi

See if the following link helps:

"Why doesn't Search work?"

For System Restore:

One or more of the System Restore files could have been corrupted - try
turning SR off/on - but I'm afraid that you will lose any existing
checkpoints:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC. After
that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all
drives' and reboot your PC again. After that 2nd reboot you should have one
new SR checkpoint.

Hi Mari-Anne,

Google brings up about 528,000 hits for Quickfinder. I never heard of it.
Can you be more specific? SWAG here. Maybe Quickfinder is usurping Search.

Start | Search | Right click Quickfinder | Properties | Shortcut tab |
Find Target Button
What folder opens? What is the name of the *.exe file?
It would help to know a little bit about Quickfinder.

Google does bring up some hits for qfinder.exe, shooting in the dark here.

Hi Will,

Unfortunately none of your very nice suggestions works. I've come to the
conclusion that my only option is to do a clean install. But thanks for
trying.

Hi Wes,

Quickfinder comes up as my fourth choice under Search in the Start menu. I
can't send you a screen shot since the menu goes away as soon as I hit print
screen. Also, when I right-click on it, I get nothing. Probably another
quirk of my current system state.

Anyhu, as I indicated above to Will, I've got way too many problems with my
system right now. I've very methodically gone through trying to do a Repair
install - booth by inserting the CD and by booting from the CD, but the
repair option (R) is no longer available. I've got a professional guy coming
tomorrow afternoon.

I'd rather pay than be sorry......

Thanks for all your help,

Mari-Anne

Good luck, Mari-Anne. You didn't mention the I paid and I am really sorry
option. ;-)
