my system randomly goes to sleep in the middle of activity.
WinXP up to date
Athlon
512M ram

It just sleeps. Any mouse action will bring it right back.

I have run all the AV programs I have. All up to date.
NOD32
Spybot
Adaware
NoAdware

I have Agnitum Outpost firewall

behind a router to cable modem

Where can I start looking for the cause?

thanks

Further to Jon's reply...Have your kids been playing around with
the computer? Very likely have changed settings.

Two more thoughts:

- use a different keyboard. one without the ACPI keys (standby, poweroff,
and one more). Maybe your keyboard has assigned some weird hotkey to
"standby" and you press it without knowing.
- try working with as few programs running in the background as possible.
for your sake, disable *any* resident program, look for them with
sysinternals' Autoruns, for example. Some programs can activate standby when
they're "done" with whatever they were doing.

Thanks for your suggestions;

I don't have kids and my wife has no clue.
I have disconnected the keyboard and it still did it.
I have seen it do it when nothing was running except the standard
background firewall, AV, and others that have been there forever.
obviously with update to these programs something could have changed
there, but I can't let it run unprotected long enough to be sure who
is causing it if in fact that is it.

I haven't found anything common to point to.
