I have a funny looking upside down "b" sign which will not go away. I think
it is something to do with paragraphs but I don't want to fiddle to much with
the settings incase I make things worse...help!

Click the "Show/Hide" icon on your Standard Toolbar (should be next to the
"Zoom" setting. This toggles on/of formatting symbols. You can also access
this by clicking the "Tools" menu, selecting "Options", clicking the "View"
TAB and changing the desired settings under "Formatting marks".

I think you're the first person I've ever seen describe it as an upside-down
"b." Most users call it a "backwards P." Its real name is pilcrow. For more
on the nonprinting characters or formatting marks it toggles the view of,
see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm
