all of a sudden today i am getting this error:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have
the appropriate permissions to access the item.

this happens every time i try to execute a .exe shortcut i have on my
desktop. I am logged in as an administrator. I can execute them from start ->
Programs. I can also execute them from start -> Run. i can run the program
from its actuall location as well. the only thing i cant seem to do is run it
from a shortcut from my desktop.

can anybody help? i'm running windows XP Pro with sp1.

Delete and then recreate the shortcut. Or right click on the shortcut and
then left click on properties. Check the path for both the Target and the
start in folder locations. If either of these become corrupted you can get
the error you are now receiving. If you try to close a shortcut by clicking
on OK or trying to click APPLY with either of these wrong it will tell you
that something is wrong.
