my I.E. will not open any pages. i get messages saying, " cannot display the
web page", " also that whatever web page i try to connect to it will say "is
not set up to establish a connection on port world wide web service (http)
with this computer. and something about checking my proxy server. i have no
idea what might have caused this or how to fix it. any help would be greatly
appreciated.

A bit late getting to you on this one but I have been alternately busy
and drunk.

Try resetting IE to defaults through internet options - advanced -
reset. This disables all add ons and worked well when I had this
problem.

Existing add ons remain there but are disabled. As you visit the
various sites that use them, keep a note of what needs what add on
(many cause IE to ask for permission) and from that you can discover
which one is messing it all up for you...and permanently disable or
delete it. If you really need the site and the add on, try out Opera
or Firefox to see if they can handle it. That way, if it is not too
MS specific, you can still see the site in question and otherwise, you
know that you will have to change your browsing habits I'm afraid.
