I am running Win98SE and I.E.6 on my laptop. Today I
worked with email and visited a few websites without
problems. When I returned to my desktop I went to
START/HELP and received a message that read "This program
has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down.". I tried virtually all my applications and received
the same message. When I click on DETAILS I get the
folling massage: "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bffc06af. It then goes on to
list a bunch of registers. I have turned off the computer
several times via on/off switch and Control/alt/delete. MS
ScanDisc has attempted to repair any damage, apparently
without success. Part way through the scan I receive the
message "ScanDisc detected an invalid long filename entry
on this drive but was unable to fix it. To fix it run
ScanDisc for Windows.". One other thing; while I was on
the net I had problems getting into my account on eBay
getting the message that my browser was not accepting
cookies. I went to Internet Options and lowered my cookie
acceptance one notch. I have a couple of question:
1. Is there a difference betwee MS ScanDisc and Windows
ScanDisc?
2. Is there hope for repair or will I need to use my
restore disc?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks. Bill

Bill,
If this affected only Internet Explorer, I'd strongly suspect a
spyware/parasite infection.

You should still start by running CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
See:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Also note the security tips on that page.
Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security,
anti-virus, etc. Also... notorious for causing problems- Gator, Kazaa and
some others.

If not caused by spyware, work through the following sites.

There are other possibilities for KERNEL32 errors, including corrupted or
outdated video drivers
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#kernel32
Start at Control Panel> Display> Settings> Advanced for information on your
video adapter/driver including (possibly) a link to the manufacturer's
website.

Additional information at:
http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/erriexpl.htm#ERRKERNEL32.DLL
http://aumha.org/win4/a/kernel32.php

Hope this helps,
Don
