I E 8 takes a long time to open my home page.
Also, when i open my mail, the back button hangs up when i try to go back
to the home page.
Window freezes are common.

I'm running windows XP,sp-3,McAfee anti virus along with ad-aware. These
issues have surfaced since i updated from I E 6 to I E 8 weeks ago.

Thanks for those web sites, howevwer the problems still exist after following
the suggested fixes.

What's the full name of the McAfee application (e.g., McAfee Antivirus Plus;
McAfee Security Center) and is your subscription current?

Has another McAfee application or a Norton application ever been installed
on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you
bought it)?

Was the McAfee application running in the background and was Ad-Aware's
Ad-Watch enabled when you installed IE8?

Two things:

1. You should make sure no security programs (especially McAfee and
AdAware) are running when you upgrade IE.

2. McAfee is a well-known resource hog that negatively affects a PC's
performance. Even AdAware, which is no longer recommended by most
people, can contribute to sluggishness. There are superior programs. If
you're interested, we can make recommendations.

What SP level are you at?

You may need to unsintall IE8 in order to temporarily revert to IE6. But
don't do this until you tell us what SP level you are at and when you
upgraded to it.

When it is time, we can post links to the "best-practices" method to
upgrade IE. It involves using a specific installation file which you can
download in advance and making sure all your security programs are
temporarily not running. (Obviously, you should be disconnected to the
Internet while doing this.) And if I remember correctly, rebooting your
PC not once but twice!

PABear and Daave,

I'm running McAfee antivirus Plus, current version. never installed any
other manufacture. McAfee is supposidly always on "Detecting" .

AdWatch was probably on when i did a upgrade to I.E.8

Forgot to add that i have CCLEANER also, but only runs when i open it.

NB: All McAfee processes (i.e., anti-virus; firewall) & Ad-Watch should have
been disabled & the Windows Firewall enabled prior to installing IE8.

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode?

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

IE8 in all OSS]

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?

Since this symptom is reproducible, try the sequence after disabling McAfee,
Ad-aware, or anything else that might conceivably be interacting with IE8
(including ad-ons).

O.K. I deleted ADAWARE and CCLEANER, and kept McAfee Virus Scan Plus.

Computer starts faster now with better browsing. Am i at risk now for all
kinds of stuff getting on my computer? What do you folks suggest?

Ccleaner is a fine program and is perfectly safe as long as you don't
use its registry cleaning feature.

McAfee has problems in that it can lead to poor performance. You may
keep it if you wish. It's your choice.

At the very least, you need to replace AdAware with another anti-malware
program. I recommend MalwareByte's AntiMalware. SUPERAntiSpyware is also
good.

If you decide to replace McAfee with something better, Avira AntiVir is
highly regarded.

The good news is that there are free versions of all the above programs.

P.S. It sounds like AdAware was causing performance hiccups for you.

One other possibility is that IE 8 has a Pop-up blocker, SmartScreen
filter and Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates turned
on. You might gain some speed.

McAfee has a "shielding" setting which would check every file all the
time. It is not too "efficient" and causes the desktop files to be
updated constant. You can tweak it.

Ad Aware is not truly needed as a shielding task. If you do periodic
scan for "junk" files, you system should still be okay. If your
system appears to slow down in general, then you need to do a complete
scan. SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes AntiMalware tends to find the
"junk" spywares the Ad Aware misses.

Suggest you delete all your virus programs and install MSE (Microsoft
Security Essentials)

Latest update:
I downloaded MALAWAREBYTES AND MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS after
installing/un-installing several other programs.
I think i'm O.K. now

Thanks to all who took the time to help me through this .

You may find that you may have no use for MALAWAREBYTES. I use MSE only and
never had a problem.
