I don't want mail to open....

I have two versions of Outlook on my computer....regular Outlook and
Express. When I open the Outlook inbox I get a list of the mail I have
received and I highlight the subject lien so as to open the mail.. In my
express version I have a split screen with the subjects on the top half and
an open piece of mail on the bottom half.

How do I change my Express so that mail is not opened until I double click
the subject..... with all of these viruses I want to be able to delete
before I open....

Wrong. Outlook EXPRESS is NOT a "lite" version of Outlook, it is a
completely different program.

Have you not looked at ANY of the settings in OE? Try View-Layout for a
start.

There are two different programs: Outlook is maintained by the
Microsoft Office group, and Outlook Express by the Microsoft Internet
Explorer group. They both do email and they look alike, but many
things are different. Not the smartest thing that Microsoft ever did.

This is an Outlook group, so you should look for an OutlookExpress
group (usually written one word like I did).

However, take a look in the Help for "Preview pane".
