Well, to start off, I use Front Page Express.
But, I think my lack of this basic knowledge may not be related tot he
package, hence, my posting. If it is indeed the wrong place to post,
then apologies.
I do not know the process involved in allowing or permitting the
file(already residing on the server) to be retrieved to the users PC
via a click on a link.
If there is a site that (I have yet to be able to locate) gives such
basic information, please do not hesitate to post that link.
I also have Front Page, and, if that makes a difference, I will write
a 'sub-page' using it to do the job.
Your better off using FrontPage (any version) rather than FPE however using
FPE does make you rather creative
I take it you mean a file other than .htm? If this is what you mean since
you say it's already on the server all you need to do is make a link to it
from a page in your web.
This page outlines it but basically.
http://accessfp.net/hyperlin.htm
Open the Web page which you want to link from and type the piece of text
which will become the link. Select it.
Tip: it's a good idea to use text which indicates where the link will take
the user - 'click here to read my blah blah' might seem a good idea but
using 'blah blah is also available as a Word document or whatever kind of
file it is' makes it easier to find for someone glancing at the page. It
also alerts the visitor to the fact that the file is an MS Word document, or
whatever file it is.
Click on the hyperlink icon to create or edit a hyperlink.
Enter the name of the file you have already saved to your Web folder - in
your case on the server. Lets say the file's name is myfile.doc (you just
put whatever you file's name and extenstion is)
There is no need to add any other information as long as your Word document
(or whatever kind of file it is) is in the same folder (your root web) as
the Web page from which you linking. If it's in
Click on OK. You will find that the text you originally selected is now
underlined in blue. (unless you have changed the formatting of course)
If you now save the page to your and open it in your browser, you will find
that the cursor changes to a hand when you roll over the link. If you have
named the link correctly, clicking on the link will take you to your Word
document. (or whatever file it is) You will either see the page displayed
by the browser automatically or else you will be prompted to open it or save
it.
