Ok I have somewhat of a strange question.....I have xp home on my
personal machine at home....I also own 2 macintosh computers both
running OS 10.3. The problem I am having is netwroking the three for
file sharing. My old computer worked fine on the network the new one
doesn't. The only big differences are 1 the machine I had was running
xp pro and it had a pci ethernet card. The motherboard I have now has
an onboard ethernet jack. Heres whats really strange I know It is not
the macs because I brought the laptop into work and it read the
workgroups fine including the secretarys's machine which is also
running xp home....thats what baffles me. I go home and get no
response. But the ethernet jack works fine I get a great internet
connection but no file sharring and the macs can't see the workgroup.
Is there some setting I may have hit. Or could it be a hardware issue.
I am getting really aggravatyed about this. especially because I fear
when I get the second pc running it won't recognize the one I am
having trouble with. The things I am going to try when I get home is
manually entering the ip as follows....smb://192.etc.etc.etc and if
all else fails literally set up a client/server type app that is
compatible with both like hotline, kdx, or ftp. A few other
notes....online gaming works great.......internet browsing works great
and I can connect from mac to mac....and downloading from outside
connections works great too.

And all you old pc guys out there who are going to say macs can't read
workgroups.....well if thats your answer you are outdated because macs
and pc have been able to file share for a good 2 years now.

I think there is something new going on with Windows XP.
Windows 2000 on this same IBM T20 laptop saw my Mac just
fine as a "Samba" server. When I upgraded to XP, it
couldn't see them any more. My Mac is running OS X 10.2.8.

Incidentally, the Mac can see my wife's laptop (which is
running Windows 2000)just fine.

I can't find anything on Windows Support or Mactopia
covering this issue. Seems like Microsoft has changed
something, and as usual with the Mac world, neglected to
tell anybody about it.
