I had a dvd player installed on my computer. When I
installed windows xp I can no longer play dvds. It says
I don't have it installed on my computer. Any help will
be greatly appreciated

1. Open XP's "Help and Support"
2. Type DVD in the search box, hit enter.
3. Click on "DVD Troubleshooter".
4. You probably need a new DVD decoder.

Hi Carey,
I have done exactly what you suggested. I still
can't find any help. Will I have to buy a dvd decorder
and driver even tho I had one installed on my computer
before I installed windows xp? I need more help
please. I really don't know what to do to get my dvd
player back. This is the message I am getting. "Windows
Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible
DVD Decorder is not installed on your computer" Any
thing else you can tell me that would help will be
greatly appreciate it. Thank You!

You upgraded for an older version of Windows??? If yes, you may need to
re-install the DVD player software. XP does not handle DVDs directly.

In order for Windows XP to play DVD's with WMP, you need something like
PowerDVD installed on teh system or someother form of DVD Player software.

You're going to have to look through the CDs that came with your computer
and find the right one. If you cannot find it and the OEM who manufactured
your PC cannot supply you with a new one, then you must purchase one....
www.intervideo.com or www.cyberlink.com. You can either purchase the whole
DVD package or both companies offer both a package which contains the
correct DVD codecs, you would then play the DVDs with Windows Media
Player... and NOT with the individual application.
