I can't open powerpoint files from my school's or my friend's com.

I can't open powerpoint files from my school's or my friend's computers even
though my version of powerpoint is newer. Windows seems to recognize the
files as powerpoint files because of the .ppt extension but then the
Powerpoint program can't open them.
 
What version of PowerPoint are you using? Have you applied all available
updates to it?
 
What is the exact error you get or what does PowerPoint do/not do? How do
you know it "seems to recognize" the files?
How are you trying to open the files? Have you tried opening PowerPoint
first and then select Open from the menu and navigating to the file?
