I can't insert sources and citations. Word 2007

Somehow, my Word doesn't have any styles for citing references and three
buttons (Manage Sources, Style:, and Bibliography) in the Citations &
Bibliography group are dimmed. I need to be able to insert the citation by
clicking the Insert Citation button and selecting Add New Source for my
practice assignment, but Add New Source option is dimmed and not active.
How can I fix these problems?

Hello Stefan,

That shouldn't really matter. Even if you open an "old-fashioned" doc
in Word, you can add citations and/or bibliographies. They are just
inserted as static text though.

The only reason I ever came across for the 'disabled' behaviour was a
(silent) error during the installation of Word 2007.

Hmm, I didn't really test before I replied. :-(

Sorry about that and thank you for giving the correct answer.

How did you fix the issue then? By repairing the installation (Office
button, Word Options, Resources category, Diagnose button)?

Should I try repairing the installation? (Yes, my file is docx format)
I'd like to make them active!

I run Diagnose but no luck. Manage Sourese/Style/Bibliography buttoms are
still dimmed and Add New Source and Add New Placeholder at the Insert
Citation drop-down lint are dimmed as well. What's wrong??
 
I'm afraid I don't know anything specific to try for the issue you are
seeing. However, renaming the normal.dotm file (with Word closed) is worth
trying. Another common way to fix issues with Word is deleting the Data key
in the registry.

I finally fixed it uninstalling and reinstalling, but I have to admit
that I didn't try manipulating the registry or the normal.dotm
template. Those could be way faster solutions for the problem.

Actually, I'm surprised that reinstalling worked, simply because it usually
leaves the registry entries (as well as the normal.dotm) intact.
