I can't hear the music on powerpoint presentation

I have successfully added music (from files on my computer) to most of my
powerpoint (version 2003) presentation. But, there is one slide where I've
tried and tried to add music and I cannot hear anything playing. I've even
tried inserting different songs thinking there might be something wrong with
one of the music files, but nothing works. What could be causing this
problem and how can I fix it?

There are a couple of possibilities:

1) The sound file is not being triggered. Check for other animations that
the sound file may be waiting on.

2) The sound card is being used by another sound process. Check for sounds
wrapping from previous slides, slide transition sounds or other hidden sound
icons on the slide.

Post back if these do not clear the silence.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried both of them without success. I even
tried completely deleting that slide and starting over. It didn't work
either. I looked at the information at www.pptfaq.com too. I copied all the
sound files to the same folder as the powerpoint presentation and relinked as
they suggested, still no success. Any other thoughts or ideas? THANKS!

What type of sound file are you inserting on this slide? Are you testing it in
Slide Show mode, running the presentation from the beginning?

I'm inserting a song (windows media audio file) on the slide. I've tried
testing it in Slide Show mode from the beginning, Slide Show from the actual
slide and have just click on play. I can't hear the song in any of those
ways.

Try going to Start > Run and type mplay32.exe and click okay. That will open
the MCI player. Go to File > Open and open your WMA file. Does it play?

What happens if you go to Start/Run, type mplay32.exe and try the WMA file
in that media player? Does it play then?

Yes, the WMA file does play in that media player!!

Yep, it was the path length! Just changed the title of the song and now it
works beautifully!! Thanks again!

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the very same problem trying to
insert a sound file into a pp slide show. I am working with an old version
of PP, but that really shouldn't matter, I wouldn't think.

I have my presentation done. I have put it, and the sound file (a .wma file
ripped from a CD) in the same folder. I have tried inserting the music file
into the presentation in the folder, but I keep getting the message "power
poing found an error that it can't correct. You should save presentations,
exit, and then restart Powerpoint. I have spent hours and hours on this, and
I'm about done. My family misses me. Another thing that might be helpful to
know...when I go to retrieve the music file to insert (insert; movies and
sound; sound from file), the insert sound screet shows the folder where the
file is located, but the file doesn't show up when just "sound files" is
listed in the type of files box. I have to choos "all files" before ito
shows up. I select it, press okay, and then the above warning message
appears. If I can't solve it here, I give up. Too much time..... Please
help! Thanks

Please tell us what version of PowerPoint you are using. "Old" doesn't tell us
anything. If it's PowerPoint 97 then you cannot use WMA files.

That must be it, because, yes, I'm using Power Point '97. Sorry should have
been more specific. So, is there anything I can do? What type file can I
insert?

PowerPoint 97 tells you - - Midi, WAV or RMI. Skip RMI though, and WMA can't be
converted to Midi, so you'll need to convert to WAV.

Indeed, that was the problem. I went online and downloaded dBPoweramp music
converter, and converted the WMA file toe WAV file. I downloaded the WMA
coded, and after that everything worked perfectly. But I have a new
questions -- what are the copyright issues associated with using a ripped cd
track on a home-made slide show?
