I cant get my sound to work

Every once in a while when i boot up my sound just doesnt
work. I just had my computer re-formatted. Ive checked
all the trouble shooting guides. No use. When i go to
open the master volume control it comes up with an error.
No mixer device installed or something like that. Blah!
